Buckinghamshire's hopes of qualifying for the later stages of the National Counties Trophy took a knock when they lost to Dorset by three wickets in a low-scoring match at Dorchester on Sunday.
Choosing to bat first on what proved to be a tricky pitch, Bucks slumped to 34-4, but determined innings from Teddie Casterton (34) Michael Payne (29no) and Ed Bragg (21) enabled them to reach 141 all out in their 50-over allocation. Ollie Breckon was the hosts' best bowler with 4-27 from his ten overs.
Dorset's batters also found it difficult to score runs, especially against Bucks seamer Cameron Parsons, who conceded only ten runs from his ten overs. But Sam Young upped the scoring rate with 30 off 21 balls and at 102-2 they seemed to be cruising to victory.
But then in a dramatic collapse, they lost three wickets in four balls, two of them to Bucks skipper Tom Hampton (left), who finished with 3-27 from his ten overs.
It soon became 111-6, but Dorset eventually reached 142-7 with 4.5 overs to spare.
Bucks must now beat Staffordshire in their last Group 4 game at Gerrards Cross on Sunday June 26, if they are to have a chance of progressing to the quarter-finals.
