Bucks Men suffered their first defeat of the season in the National Counties Cluberly Championship as they went down by eight wickets to Northumberland in their Eastern Division One match at Benwell Hill on Tuesday.

In a match of fluctuating fortunes, the hosts eventually reached their victory target of 221 with nearly nine overs to spare.

Following a delayed start of almost four hours due to rain on Sunday, Bucks initially struggled after choosing to bat first. Despite a forceful 79 from 147 balls by opener Billy Dodds, they slipped to 156-8.

They were revived by a ninth-wicket partnership of 76 between Ed Bragg, who recorded a Bucks career-best 57, and skipper Conner Haddow (42), helping them reach 257 from 80.5 overs. The damage for Northumberland was inflicted by former Durham all-rounder Johnny Bushnell, who took 6-88 from 22 overs.

That total proved enough to give Bucks a first-innings lead of 45 as the hosts slipped from 86-1 to 212 all out, despite 57 from Ross Whitfield. Haddow was the pick of the Bucks bowlers, returning figures of 3-43 from 20 overs.

Bucks failed to build on that advantage. Ewan Cox made a brisk 51 from 56 balls, including one six and nine fours, but he received little support as the visitors were bowled out for 175 shortly after lunch on the third day. Northumberland skipper and left-arm spinner Oliver McGee returned figures of 4-25.

With plenty of time to reach their target of 221, Northumberland were rarely troubled thanks to a splendid unbeaten 106 from Sol Bell, supported by Bushnell's unbeaten 57. The pair shared an unbroken third-wicket partnership of 105 in 25 overs as the hosts secured victory by eight wickets with 9.5 overs to spare.

Bucks, who comfortably beat Staffordshire in their opening Eastern Division One match, will look to return to winning ways when they entertain Suffolk at Chesham in a three-day match starting this Sunday.
